Valuing Standing Forests: Subnational Engagement with the Tropical Forest Forever Facility

Thursday, May 22, 2025
Convention Center at the Federal University of Acre
Times: 14h30 to 16h00 and 17h00 to 18h00

  1. Overall Objective. Since it was first announced, the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) holds great promise for bringing much-needed funding to the states, provinces, and regions around the world that are doing the hard work of forest conservation. Important planning meetings for the design of this facility have been taking places in recent months and are still ongoing. And as we head into COP 30, we expect the TFFF to be front and center as countries determine pathways forward for turning forest conservation into much-needed profits that benefit the communities living in tropical forest regions across the world. Given this, it is time to begin a dialogue about subnational engagement in the TFFF and to co-construct mechanisms for subnational governments to work with national governments for implementation of this forest conservation facility.
  2. Specific Objectives. This session will present the TFFF and have a discussion among participants for how the eventual implementation of this facility can work for the states and provinces of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force.
  3. Overview. This session will begin with an “interview/conversation” format featuring one of the TFFF designers from the Brazilian National Government as well as the Secretary of the Environment from the GCF Task Force annual meeting host state, Acre, Brazil. This overview will be followed by a question and answer period and subsequently a general discussion on the TFFF. We aim to end the session with a list of important and viable possibilities to promoting subnational – national collaboration.
