On July 17th the State of Jalisco took another step forward with its jurisdictional program to reduce deforestation by opening its draft State Strategy for the Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (EE-REDD+ for its acronym in Spanish). Since 2011, the State of Jalisco has been working in coordination with the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), through the Early Actions REDD + (AT-REDD +) and, more recently, the Initiative Reduction of Emissions (IRE) that will operate in 2018 with the signing of the Emissions Reduction Purchase Agreement. The new strategy builds on Jalisco’s leadership in the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force, which it chaired in 2016.Â
In 2016, the government of the State of Jalisco, through the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (SEMADET), began the process of preparing the EEREDD+ through a series of multistakeholder planning workshops. The role of the EE REDD+ is to serve as an instrument of state planning, helping to identify opportunities for progress, address gaps and capitalize on opportunities for the implementation of REDD+. It establishes goals, objectives and lines of action that serve as a strategic framework to generate the implementation of REDD + according to the social, economic and legal context of the state.Â
Ambitious goals established in the strategy include:Â

Achieve a zero percent rate of net deforestation in forest ecosystems of Jalisco

Increase the area under sustainable forest management by 10% and promote forest certification at the state level

Increase forest conservation areas and their biodiversity by 10%

Promote the restoration of forest ecosystems

Articulate public policy instruments

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from forest degradation and deforestation by 90%
