Piura Establishes Platform to Conserve Unique Ecosystems of Northern Peru

Oct 5, 2017

On September 18th the Regional Government of Piura, a member of the Governors’ Climate and Forests (GCF) Task Force, convened the first meeting of the Platform of Northern Forests Peru.  The platform provides a forum to bring together public authorities, the private sector and civil society in Piura, Tumbes and Lambayeque in an effort to coordinate and promote policies and initiatives which conserve dry forests, mangroves and moorland ecosystems.

Members who attended the first platform meeting reviewed the current state of policies and mechanisms that effect the management of these forest ecosystems at both the national and regional level.  A particular focus was placed on the challenges these forests face in light of climate change, biodiversity loss and desertification. Participants also discussed the structure and content of the platform’s strategic plan and designed a governance mechanism to advance the initiative.

As a result of this multi-stakeholder effort, the following agreements were reached: i) the platform will be led by the presiding president of the platform, which was designated to be the Regional Government of Piura with the support of Country Coordination of GCF Task Force (Mecanismos de Desarrollo Alternos – MDA); MDA will give technical assistance to build the strategic plan which will be finalized in December, 2017; ii) the Government of Piura will officially launch the initiative at the GCF Task Force Annual Meeting in Balikpapan, Indonesia; iii) the next meeting will be planned in the first quarter of 2018 to approve the strategic plan, establish a technical secretary and prepare an operational plan for 2018.

Members of the platform gathered for the first meeting on September 18th, 2017.
