The proposed Chancay-Pucallpa Railway in Peru would connect the Port of Chancay on the Pacific coast to the Amazon basin in Pucallpa, Ucayali. With a planned length of about 900 km, the project is intended to facilitate freight and passenger transport, including agricultural exports from Ucayali, a GCF Task Force member jurisdiction. While the railway would improve the connectivity and economic integration of the Peruvian Amazon, it would also come with environmental, social and governance challenges.
In order to address these concerns, a discussion workshop called “Challenges and Opportunities to Promote the Chancay-Pucallpa Railway” was held on August 17, 2026. The workshop was held within the framework of the Sustainable Amazon Connectivity Working Group of the Amazon Regional Association (Mancomunidad Regional Amazónica, MRA) and was chaired by the MRA. It was jointly organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society, The Nature Conservancy Peru, and the Group for the Analysis of Development (Grupo de Análisis para el Desarrollo, GRADE) with the support of the GCF Task Force, Alternative Development Mechanisms (Mecanismos de Desarrollo Alternos, MDA), and Amazonia+.
The meeting allowed for the exchange of perspectives between authorities of the Congress of the Republic, the national government, regional authorities and specialists. Recommendations made during the meeting will serve as input to continue deepening the technical discussion on this initiative.
