Emissions Neutrality and Deforestation – Results and Challenges of States and Companies in the Brazilian Amazon

Sep 20, 2021

It’s Climate Week NYC 2021! This Wednesday, September 22nd at 10:00 am EST / 11:00 am in Brasília, join us LIVE on YouTube for a discussion on “Emissions Neutrality and Deforestation – Results and Challenges of States and Companies in the Brazilian Amazon.” Click here for the English broadcast, and here for the Portuguese broadcast.

This session will share the commitments, strategies, and challenges of several sectors working to achieve GHG emissions neutrality by 2050. Achieving this target depends upon reducing deforestation in the Amazon—and this can only be done through targeted actions and strategic partnerships among governments, companies, and civil society.

The three largest Brazilian Amazonian states: Mato Grosso, Pará, and Amazonas, all members of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCFTF) and the UNDER2 Coalition, will discuss how this takes place from the perspective of governments by presenting decarbonization trajectories and specific climate action strategies that reinforce jurisdiction-wide emissions reductions and contribute to the global Race to Zero campaign. In addition, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), which represents 70 private sector actors across Brazil, will address how the private sector is approaching carbon neutrality through concrete examples from the Marfrig and Natura companies.

The session will also showcase an innovative collaborative, “The Amazon Concertation,” which unites more than 200 business leaders, researchers, politicians, and environmentalists to promote sustainable development and climate neutrality across the Amazon.
