7th Annual Meeting — Catlonia, Spain — 2015

June 15 – June 18, 2015 Catlonia, Spain

The 7th Annual Meeting of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF Task Force) was hosted by the 2015 GCF Task Force Chair, Catalonia, and took place from June 15-18, 2015, in Barcelona, Spain. This event is a unique opportunity to advance commitments GCF Task Force member states and provinces have made to build robust jurisdictional programs to protect forests and climate while enhancing livelihoods.  In particular, GCF Task Force members are looking to achieve commitments made in the Rio Branco Declaration signed at the 6th Annual Meeting, in which members agreed to reduce deforestation 80% by 2020.

The Annual Meeting will serve as a collaborative platform to create new partnerships with European jurisdictions, the private sector, civil society, Indigenous peoples, and financial institutions so together they can develop pathways to success.  It will also be a catalyst for uniting subnational initiatives in a common voice leading up to the UNFCCC COP21.  The event will include a number of sessions to update and involve meeting participants including:

  • a high-level session with Governors, Ministers, Secretaries of Environment, and other dignitaries from Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, Spain, and the United States;
  • updates on progress from GCF Task Force member states and provinces and stakeholders during an interactive exhibition;
  • a roundtable discussion with the GCF Task Force Coordinators and country representatives;
  • an update from the GCF Task Force Secretariat and the Governors’ Climate and Forests Fund; and
  • facilitated breakout sessions on high priority topics such as subnational networks and the road to COP21, public and private financing strategies for low emissions development and reduced deforestation, and pathways for the Global South to engage with the European Union and low emissions financing programs.
