On August 21, 2025, the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCFTF) participated in the launch of the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI)’s updated “Accessing High-Integrity Carbon Markets on the Road to COP30: A Toolkit for Policymakers.” This toolkit was also developed by Climate Focus and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The GCFTF collaborated with VCMI on the review and dissemination of this Toolkit to help ensure that the toolkit benefits GCFTF member jurisdictions and that subnational government voices and experiences are reflected in this important work.
As the VCMI notes in their press release,
“the Carbon Markets Access Toolkit provides a step-by-step guide for governments to decide whether and how to engage with regulated and voluntary carbon markets, as well as those facilitated under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Developing countries need an estimated $2.7 trillion annually by 2030 to fund their climate and nature-related goals, with $1.3 trillion needed in international support.”
VCMI and the GCFTF have previously collaborated on a “Best Practice Guide for Developing Projects in the Voluntary Carbon Market in Yucatán” and is partnering on another guide in Brazil.
